I plan to take the tower down during a lightning storm. However, one should have some degree of protection. I constructed a faraday cage and mounted it above the wiring from the stator to the slip ring connector. I also added a rod that extends above the stator by about two feet. If lightning does strike it will hit this rod or cage and be diverted through the metal tower to the ground. I also plan to add a three phase lightning arrestor.
